Saint James Theodore Holly (born 1829) was Episcopalian Bishop of Haiti and the Dominican Republic - the first African-American bishop of the Episcopal church. Holly was interested in Haiti as a possible destination for African-Americans fleeing slavery and unjust treatment in the United States. When his plans for African-American emigration to Haiti failed, he nevertheless remained on the island, advancing the Christian mission there. Under his leadership the Episcopal church founded many churches, schools and hospitals in Haiti. He is commemorated in the Episcopal church on March 13.
