Saint Benedict the Moor was a 16th century Franciscan Friar from Sicily. His parents were slaves from Africa, but Benedict was set free as a child. Benedict distinguished himself as a friar, and eventually became superior of his community. Saint Benedict is especially important for Catholics who are members of the African diaspora, especially in the Americas.
